Chinese New Year is coming!

On Jan. 29, the short film for the 2021 Chinese New Year arrived, as Apple officially released the Chinese New Year film, “Nian” directed by 2020 Golden Globe Awards nominee Lulu Wang for Best Foreign Language Film, “The Farewell.”

“Nian” was inspired by a familiar Chinese New Year legend, It is said that in ancient times, there was a beast called Nian, which would attack people and villages at the end of each year. People paste Spring Festival couplets and set off firecrackers to drive it away. Over time, pasting the Spring Festival couplets and setting off firecrackers became the Spring Festival custom. The movie tells the story of a little girl and a beast called Nian.

There are many stories about the Monster Nian, among which red is a festive color in the eyes of the Chinese people and also has something to do with it! Because “Nian” is not only afraid of the sound of firecrackers but also afraid of the color red. Ancient people believed that red could ward off evil spirits, so red became a good color. The reason why red can grow “prosperous” is that in addition to its own strong colors, but also because it is the root of all colors.

Up to now, the red color, which symbolizes passion, endeavor, and good luck, is still the first choice for people to celebrate festivals. During the Spring Festival, Chinese people often wear new red clothes to get rid of the old and welcome the new. In fact,  cleaning the house is also a form of ringing out the Old Year and ringing in the New Year.

Beginning on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month Chinese people carry out a thorough ‘winter-cleaning’ of their houses. This is called “sweeping away the dust”, and represents a wish to put away old things, bid farewell to the old year, and welcome in the New Year. But in fact, cleaning is a very painful thing to do, the workload is large, it is pure physical labor, makes people feel very tired.
